Roberto Merrill is Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department at the University of Minho, where he coordinates the Master of Political Philosophy. He also is a researcher at the Center for Ethics, Politics and Society (CEPS), where he directs the Research Project on Unconditional Basic Income. The project, funded by FCT with € 196,029.25, gathered a team of researchers of international merit: https://ubiexperiments.weebly.com/). He is also president of the Portuguese Association for Unconditional Basic Income. He is Visiting Assistant Professor in the MSc in Public Policy at ISCTE and an Associate Researcher at CEVIPOF (Sciences Po-Paris). Dr. Merril research interests within political philosophy include liberal neutrality, paternalism and pluralism of values, as well as contemporary theories of distributive justice. He recently completed a book on unconditional basic income and is currently working on a manuscript on social justice and pre-distribution. He just published (with António Baptista) a volume on Democracy of Owners. His latest book on political theory (co-edited with Daniel Weinstock) was about Political Neutrality (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014). Before this book, he edited two volumes on Republicanism (one of them in collaboration with Vincent Bourdeau) and one volume on libertarianism. Dr. Merril research interests within ethics include meta-ethics and normative ethics, as well as some questions of applied ethics, and the relationship between art and morality. In these fields he wrote an article on paternalism and distributive justice in clinical trials in oncology, and another one on theories of justice applied to health, as well as a book (with João Cardoso Rosas) on the ethical evaluation of controversial technologies in citizens' conferences. His interests in aesthetic morality led him to publish a volume on art and ethics. He also edited in 2017 a volume of moral philosophy and applied ethics in honor of the moral philosopher Ruwen Ogien. Research Interests: Democracy of owners, political neutrality, paternalism, pluralism, pre-distribution, basic income, republicanism, applied ethics . Positions: Director of the Master in Political Philosophy.
