João Ribeiro Mendes is tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Department of Philosophy, Institute of Arts and Humanities (IAH), University of Minho (UM), Braga, Portugal. He teaches graduate and postgraduate courses on Epistemology, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Technology, and Science, Technology and Society. He is Deputy-director of the Department of Philosophy at UM since 2014 and elected member of the IAH Council (since 2016), Scientific Council (since 2016) and Pedagogical Council (since 2017). He was director of the Master in Political Philosophy between 2016 and 2018. He has been supervising several PhD and Master students. He is research fellow and current Director of the Centre for Ethics, Politics and Society at UM, after have been for almost two decades researcher of the Centre for Humanistic Studies and Coordinator of its Research Line on Philosophy and Culture between 2012 and 2016. He is author and co-author of several academic books, proceedings and journal volumes, and also has published numerous articles, critical reviews and book chapters in Portuguese and English on diverse topics. He is editor of Ethics, Politics & Society. A Journal in Applied Ethics and Political Philosophy and was chief-editor of Diacrítica-série Filosofia e Cultura, a journal of Humanities, between 2012 and 2016. He is the Principal Investigator of two research projects: (a) SFIDA: Philosophical Innovative Solutions to the Anthropocene Challenge (2018-2022); (b) Reflexive Engineers - A Critical Approach to the Engineering Thought Tradition about Technology (2014-2020). He was visiting professor at the Jagiellonian University of Krakow (Poland) in 2014, Sun Yat-Sen University (Zhuhai, China), and Middle-East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey). He is founding member and current president of the Philosophical Society of the Galicia-North of Portugal since 2014, and member of the following Scientific Societies: Portuguese Philosophical Society (since 2012); Society for Philosophy of Science in Practice (since 2012); Dutch Society for Philosophy of Science (since 2013); Political Science Association-Portugal (since 2017); Interuniversity Society of Philosophy (since 2017), International Association of Hispanists (since 2018). He regularly publishes op-ed articles for the newspaper Correio do Minho. He plays tennis at the Braga Tennis Club.
