Short bionote:

As lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Minho, Prof. Alexandra Abranches taught courses on Ethics, Political Philosophy, History of Social and Political Ideas, Modern Philosophy, Contemporary Philosophy, Philosophical Anthropology, Aesthetics, Philosophy of Mind and Metaphysics. 

Her doctoral dissertation focused on David Hume's moral philosophy. She published the book Sentimentalismo Filosófico: a Noção de Comunidade no Pensamento de C. S. Peirce (Braga, CEH, 2004) on the American pragmatist Charles Sanders Peirce, as a version of her master thesis. She co-authored a book on the History of Philosophy with the title As Questões que se Repetem: uma Breve História da Filosofia (Lisboa, D. Quixote, 2012). She also translated into Portuguese Burke's A Philosophical Investigation of the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and the Beautiful (Lisbon, Ed.70, 2013). 

Research Interests: Prof. Abranches's research interests include the History of Ethics, in particular the naturalist and rationalist traditions deriving from Hobbes and the naturalist and sentimentalist traditions that culminate in Hume; themes in meta-ethics, in particular moral psychology and moral motivation; the metaphysics of free will; classical pragmatism. She is now expanding her interests, both in teaching and research, to include the history of women's thought and feminist philosophy. She is working on a funding proposal for a project aiming at producing critical editions, translated into portuguese, of important philosophical texts written by women in the XVIIth and XVIIIth century.

Os meus interesses de investigação incluem a História da Ética, em particular as tradições naturalistas e racionalistas que derivam de Hobbes e as tradições naturalistas e sentimentalistas que culminam em Hume; temas de meta-ética, particularmente psicologia e motivação moral; a metafísica do livre-arbítrio; e o pragmatismo clássico. Estou a expandir os meus interesses, tanto de leccionação como de investigação, para incluírem a história do pensamento das mulheres e a filosofia feminista..
